What is Baybayin?

Baybayin (also known as Alibata) is an ancient script used in the Philippines before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. It is a Brahmic script, related to scripts from Indonesia, Malaysia, and other Southeast Asian countries. Each character in Baybayin represents a syllable, making it a unique and beautiful writing system.

The script experienced a decline during the Spanish colonial period when the Latin alphabet was introduced. Today, there is a growing movement to revive and preserve Baybayin as an important part of Filipino cultural identity. It has been featured in Philippine currency, tattoos, art, and educational materials.
